Desperate times call for desperate measures when it comes to the situation in the Ukraine and Crimea, and what better negotiator is there – in Hollywood, at least – than Liam Neeson?

The Taken actor and his unique set of skills made a surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live this weekend to deliver a funny message to Vladimir Putin that thriller fans were likely to recognize.

Spoofing his former CIA agent Taken character Bryan Mills, the 61-year-old helped Jay Pharaoh’s Barack Obama open the show, which was hosted by Girls star Lena Dunham.

Delivering the infamous speech he gives in the 2008 action flick to the men who have kidnapped his daughter – with quite a few changes – Neeson said: ‘Mr. Putin, Vladimir: I’ve never met you. I don’t have experience in international diplomacy, but what I do have is a very specific set of skills.’

‘Skills that would make me a nightmare for you.

‘By which I mean I’m an actor in Hollywood with a lot of connections.’

Then Neeson and Obama presentd their project, which was ‘written in a language [Putin] could understand’:

A video montage started where Obama engaged in the shirtless, animal-wrestling, motorbike-riding machismo that Putin has come to be defined by.

The point was to send a message to Russian President Vladimir Putin that America, too, can be tough. At least when it comes to acting tough.

‘Because the world needs this,’ Neeson and Pharaoh said in unison.
